Bringing RuYi to Melbourne

Combining the elegance of Chinese cuisine with the urban streets of Melbourne, we invite you to our serene meeting place for family, friends and colleagues alike. May you find everything ‘as you wish’ in our contemporary restaurant.

The heart and soul of RuYi are Head Chef Sheng and Restaurant Manager Qian Qian. For them, RuYi is a place of connection. To feel close to their cultural roots and to share those experiences with each and every guest.

THE STORY OF RUYI

Our family heirloom. A spiritual object called RuYi. Said to make everything in life ‘as you wish.’ Passed through the generations until looted by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

Since then, family have scattered to every part of the world. And as the years have passed, it has become my personal journey to find my own RuYi in life. Yet my definition of RuYi has changed. Down to earth friendliness. A pure smile bringing happiness to others. Sharing beautiful food with friends and family.

In the spirit of things that have long gone but always occupy a special place in your heart, I present you RuYi. I hope you find yours too.

Sheng, Head Chef

It all started with family…

When IT entrepreneur Sheng Fang was seeking a new direction, it was time spent with his young son, indulging in a shared love for noodles, that lit the first spark. Sheng began manufacturing authentic Chinese noodles and door-knocking chefs at restaurants to build a customer base. With the products proving popular, the business soon expanded to offer more; such as authentic Chinese sauces and dumplings.

Sheng soon became close friends with many of the chefs who helped him hone his skills and knowledge of the industry. In 2013, RuYi opened its doors. With a great love of food and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Sheng has continued to develop the concept for RuYi – taking it from a simple dumpling and wine bar to the modern Chinese restaurant it is today.

Sheng grew up around the world – from China to Japan and Fiji – but after 30 years in Melbourne, it is truly his home. Bringing his family stories from China to Melbourne has been the greatest, yet most rewarding, challenge of his career so far.

On rare days off, Sheng enjoys the simple things. It may be taking a ride on his Ducati, cooking a feast for his family or going on a meditative jog. He’s also a lifelong antiques collector who relishes in the moment of connection when you find a piece that speaks direct to the soul.
